Kylian Mbappe scored twice on Sunday night to reach 100 goals for Real Madrid, a milestone achieved in a 2-1 victory over Barcelona at Camp Nou. The French forward's brace extended his season tally to 14 goals and provided the decisive edge in a match that ended Barcelona's perfect league record.

The result marked the first league defeat for the Catalan club this season, halting a nine-game winning streak. Had Barcelona won, they would have surpassed Real Madrid's record for the best start in the Spanish top flight, set during the 1968-69 season. This was Hansi Flick's side's second consecutive loss, following their recent Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

The win shifted the historical balance of power between the two clubs. Real Madrid now holds the all-time head-to-head advantage with 107 wins compared to Barcelona's 106 in their shared fixture list.

Mbappe, 27, joined Real Madrid from PSG in 2024. His current campaign has seen him emerge as the second-best scorer in La Liga. The milestone arrives on the eve of the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London, where the former World Cup Golden Boot winner is considered a frontrunner for the individual award.

The victory has stabilized Real Madrid's season after earlier losses to Real Betis and Atletico Madrid. The team has now won five consecutive matches across all competitions, including three in La Liga. Real Madrid currently sits third in the league standings with 24 points after 10 matches, trailing Barcelona by three points. Atletico Madrid occupies second place with 25 points.

Manager Jose Mourinho, returning to the club after a 13-year absence, used the platform to define the team's priorities. He noted that while the win was important, the focus remains on securing the championship. "If we win today but lose at El Sardinero, it counts for nothing, because Madrid isn't playing to win at the Camp Nou," Mourinho said. "They're playing to win the championship."

The result serves as a tangible step for a squad that has gone two seasons without major trophies. Mourinho's tactical approach has so far produced a winning run that suggests the team is closing the gap on Barcelona in the early stages of the season.
