The Seattle Seahawks have added a proven starter to their offensive line, securing the services of three-time All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson from the Indianapolis Colts. This acquisition occurs just days after the Seahawks defeated the Kansas City Chiefs for the first time this season, marking a clear intent to solidify their front five ahead of the final stretch of the regular season.

According to sources confirmed to FOX 13 Seattle, the Seahawks sent a third-round pick in 2027 and a fifth-round pick in 2028 to Indianapolis to complete the trade. The move addresses specific statistical weaknesses in the Seahawks' offense, which currently ranks 17th in the league in rushing yards per game and 23rd in yards per carry, averaging 3.9 yards per attempt.

Nelson, a 30-year-old from Holmdel, New Jersey, was selected by the Colts in the first round of the 2018 draft with the sixth overall pick. He has spent his entire nine-year career in Indianapolis, where he established himself as a mainstay at left guard. He has earned a Pro Bowl selection in every season of his professional career and has received three First-Team All-Pro honors. Nelson also shares a collegiate history with Seahawks safety Julian Love, having played at Notre Dame for two years.

The trade provides immediate financial relief for Seattle as well. Nelson is in the final year of a four-year contract with a $16 million base salary for the 2026 season. With 11 weeks remaining, the Seahawks will assume responsibility for $9.78 million of that salary. The team entered the day with $13.4 million in available cap space, according to OverTheCap.com, allowing them to absorb the cost without exceeding their limit.

General Manager John Schneider has frequently used midseason trades to strengthen the roster in recent years. In 2025, Seattle acquired wide receiver Rashid Shaheed. Previous trades include linebacker Ernest Jones IV in 2024, defensive tackle Leonard Williams in 2023, and tackle Duane Brown in 2017. The addition of Nelson follows a pattern of adding experienced talent to address specific gaps.

The timing of the trade coincides with an injury to starting left tackle Charles Cross, who is expected to miss several games due to an ankle issue sustained during the victory over the Chiefs. The Seahawks' current right guard, Anthony Bradford, recently returned from injured reserve. First-round pick Grey Zabel currently occupies the left guard position, a spot where Nelson played exclusively during his time in the NFL.

Zabel played left tackle and right guard at North Dakota State University, providing the coaching staff with flexibility in how they deploy the offensive line personnel. Nelson also played right guard at Notre Dame, suggesting he may not be limited to the left guard position. The Seahawks currently rank 21st in pass block win rate and have allowed 10 sacks and 26 quarterback hits in their losses to the San Francisco 49ers and the Denver Broncos.
