Nicolas Jackson scored both goals for Aston Villa on Saturday, securing a 2-1 victory over Manchester City that ended the visitors' flawless start to the Premier League campaign. The result halted a historic run for City manager Enzo Maresca, who had previously become the first manager to win his opening seven matches in charge of a new club. Villa Park proved to be a difficult venue once again, as City have now lost in each of the last four seasons at this ground.

The home side struck early when Marc Guehi committed a heavy touch in the sixth minute. Jackson took advantage of the error, cutting inside Elliott Anderson before firing a high shot past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The early goal set the tone for a match where Villa relied heavily on their new goalkeeper, Zion Suzuki, to keep the scoreline close despite City controlling much of the first half.

City created several chances but were repeatedly denied by Suzuki. Iliman Ndiaye, Rayan Cherki, and Abdukodir Khusanov all failed to find the net, and Ndiaye even struck the post. The pressure eventually paid off in the 52nd minute when Erling Haaland headed in a cross from Ndiaye. This goal marked Haaland's 13th of the season in just 10 appearances, temporarily equalizing the match.

Moments after the equalizer, Josko Gvardiol had a strong chance to put City ahead, but his fierce drive was turned onto the crossbar by Suzuki. Villa responded quickly in the 60th minute to reclaim the lead. Ibrahim Mbaye was played in behind the City defense and crossed the ball, allowing Jackson to place a low shot past Donnarumma, who should have been able to save it.

The final whistle confirmed the defeat for City, leaving them vulnerable at the top of the table. Arsenal now has the opportunity to move level on points with City if it beats Everton at home later on Saturday. For Villa, the victory was its sixth win in seven games across all competitions, moving the club up to sixth place in the standings.

The win highlights the continued success of manager Unai Emery, who has transformed Villa from a dormant force into a Champions League participant since arriving four years ago. This achievement is particularly notable given the significant squad changes during the transfer window. Six players who started in last season's Europa League victory have since left the club.

New summer signings have already made an impact, with Jackson, Suzuki, Mbaye, and Johan Manzambi contributing to the team's momentum after a slow start. The performance suggests that Emery's rebuilding project is yielding results despite the loss of core personnel.

Manchester City had been winning matches despite ongoing uncertainty regarding their Premier League future. The 10-time English champions are appealing a guilty verdict on more than 100 charges related to financial rule breaches between 2009 and 2018. Potential sanctions, including the possibility of relegation, loom large, though there was little visible effect on the players until two defensive errors cost them the game in Birmingham.
