14 consecutive Central Section titles. That is the record Ryleigh Schoonover is carrying with her as she begins a new chapter in her basketball career, trading her high school uniform for the Fresno State jersey. The former Clovis West standout is stepping into her first season with the Bulldogs women's program as a member of a highly regarded freshman class.
Schoonover arrives from a high school program where winning has become the expectation rather than the exception. For the past 14 years, the Golden Eagles have secured section championships year after year, a streak that has shaped the team's identity. Coach Craig Campbell, who has led the program through that run, emphasizes consistency above all else. "We want to be good every year," Campbell said. "We're not going to win it every year, but we want to be knocking on the door every year."
While other prominent players have moved on to programs further afield, Schoonover chose to stay close to her roots. She views playing for Fresno State as a way to represent the community that raised her. "To wear that valley 'V' on your chest, it's something different," Schoonover said, noting that the significance is often lost on those outside the region.
Her decision to join the Bulldogs has drawn immediate praise from head coach Ryan McCarthy, who speaks highly of her standing among her peers. "In my opinion, Riley was the best player in the area for her class of 2026," McCarthy said. "Riley came in and proved that right away."
Schoonover credits her high school coach for laying the groundwork necessary to compete at the collegiate level. She believes the transition requires no change in mindset, stating that at both levels, "Everything is the standard." McCarthy agrees, suggesting that her background in a winning program has prepared her for the demands of his team. "She played with a very good high school basketball program here, and all they did was win," McCarthy said. "And so, that's the expectation when she sets out on the floor."
The Bulldogs are currently aiming for a Pac-12 championship, and Schoonover is preparing to contribute to that pursuit. Her first appearance on the court is drawing near, with the season opener against UC Merced scheduled for later this month.
Campbell, who coached Schoonover at Clovis West, remains confident that his former player has significant room for growth. He believes her potential extends far beyond what she has already achieved, telling reporters, "I think that's one of the things that's so exciting for Coach McCarthy and the staff is she's just scratching the surface on what a gifted player she could be for them."
