The Honolulu Police Department announced on Wednesday that the 66-year-old victim involved in a recent incident in the Kalihi district has died. This development changes the status of the case, which is now officially classified as a murder.

The update confirms that the individual sustained fatal injuries. The department issued a formal statement regarding the change in case classification. The victim was 66 years old at the time of their passing. The incident occurred in the Kalihi area of Honolulu.

The police department distributed the news alongside a set of pedestrian safety guidelines. These guidelines were released in six languages to assist the local community. The languages included were Vietnamese, Samoan, Korean, Japanese, Filipino, and Chinese. The English version was also provided for general reference.

The safety tips advise pedestrians to cross streets only at corners or designated crosswalks. Instructed to keep to the right side of the crosswalk, walkers should always look left, right, and left before stepping off the curb. The guidance emphasizes walking rather than running across the street. Pedestrians are told to use pedestrian signal buttons at lighted intersections and wait for the walk indicator to activate.

Regarding visibility, the department recommends wearing bright or light-colored clothing during daytime walks or jogs. For nighttime activity, the tips suggest wearing retro-reflective materials. The guidelines also warn pedestrians to watch for vehicles backing out of driveways, noting that drivers may not see them. When waiting for a bus, individuals should stand on the side of the road at least 10 feet away from the stopping point.

The Vietnamese section of the release specifically mentions walking on the left side of the road if a sidewalk is not available. It advises facing oncoming traffic in such situations. The Samoan text provides similar instructions, urging caution when crossing at corners or crosswalks. The Korean guidelines stress the importance of using crosswalks and pedestrian signals. The Japanese text highlights the need to check left, right, and left while crossing.

The Filipino instructions reiterate the rule to cross only at corners or crosswalks. They remind pedestrians to stand at least 10 feet from the bus stop. The Chinese version, provided in traditional characters, advises using pedestrian signal buttons at intersections with traffic lights. It also recommends wearing bright clothing for daytime visibility and reflective gear at night.

The police department included these specific safety measures in the same update as the homicide announcement. The guidelines serve as a public reminder for residents in the affected area. The release contains no further details on the investigation, the suspect, or the specific circumstances of the injury. The case remains open as the department continues its inquiry into the fatal incident in Kalihi.
