The Honolulu Police Department has opened the search for a new Communications Director to serve in the Office of the Chief.

The City and County of Honolulu posted the job listing on November 5, 2026, seeking a candidate with strong managerial and leadership skills.

The role sits directly under Police Chief David Lazar and the department's executive leadership team.

The successful candidate will lead the communications team, set performance expectations, and provide strategic guidance on media relations and crisis communications.

Mayor Rick Blangiardi said the department has made progress in public communication over the past year and intends to maintain that momentum.

"With Chief David Lazar now leading the department, it is critically important that we find a proven communications leader who can work alongside him to clearly articulate his vision," Blangiardi said.

He added that the new director must have the experience and judgment to help Chief Lazar move the department forward while strengthening public trust.

Chief Lazar emphasized that communication is a fundamental part of good policing.

"I want someone on our leadership team who understands the importance of getting information out quickly, accurately, and responsibly," Lazar said.

The position requires managing media relations, news releases, social media platforms, and public information campaigns.

The director will also coordinate messaging during major incidents, criminal investigations, and emergencies.

Internal communications will be a key responsibility, as the director must keep department personnel informed and engaged through strategic messaging and internal updates. The role includes preparing speeches, statements, and legislative testimony for the Chief of Police and other executive leaders. The candidate must also mentor and develop the communications staff to ensure a high standard of performance. The minimum qualifications include a bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field. Applicants must have at least five years of experience in media relations, public information, or journalism. At least two of those years must have been in a leadership capacity. The department seeks a candidate with demonstrated excellence in management, writing, editing, and public speaking. Candidates must show the ability to work under pressure and manage sensitive, high-profile communications. The department will evaluate applicants on their organizational skills, interpersonal abilities, and capacity to build consensus. Interested individuals can apply through the City and County of Honolulu's employment portal. The listing includes specific instructions for the application process and required documents.
