Apple’s first foldable smartphone is now on sale, but the device ships without the hardware required to fully utilize its primary features.
Writing on the new Apple Pencil support, a capability unique to iPhones, the company confirmed the feature will activate with the iOS 27.2 update next week. Only the Apple Pencil (USB-C) is compatible, and it is currently listed at $69, a reduction from its standard price of $79. The design reportedly mimics the proportions of a standard A-series paper notebook, allowing users to write and sketch on both the outer and inner displays.
Fast charging performance is another area where an additional purchase is necessary. The iPhone Duo can reach 50 percent battery capacity in approximately 20 minutes, a speed that requires a specific power adapter. The retail box includes a USB-C cable but no power brick. Apple sells a 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with a 60W maximum output for $34, down from $39. An alternative is Anker’s 100W USB-C charger, which includes a five-foot cable and costs $29.
Navigation and home monitoring also rely on separate accessories. ESR’s MagSafe Car Mount is available for $19, reduced from $29, allowing drivers to clip the device to an air vent. For home security, the new StandBy mode enables users to view smart home accessories without the phone charging. This feature supports Home Camera and Home Modular views, with compatible options including the $39 Aqara G100 2K camera and the $69 eufy 4K camera.
Protective cases are the final category requiring immediate purchase. Third-party options include the $29 SPIDERCASE Magnetic Case, which features a built-in stand, and the $39 Spigen Ultra Hybrid Pro. Apple offers the iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand for $129 and the standard iPhone Duo Case for $79. These five categories of add-ons total $249 for the specific items recommended for new owners.
Apple has positioned the iPhone Duo as a versatile device that expands the capabilities of the existing ecosystem. The separation of these core components from the main box follows a recent trend in the company's hardware releases. Buyers must now assemble their own setup using the available third-party and first-party accessories to replicate the full intended experience.
The availability of these items confirms the launch timeline for the iPhone Duo’s companion ecosystem. The pricing structure for these peripherals aligns with previous Apple product launches where accessories are sold separately from the primary device. The specific combination of the pencil, charger, mount, camera, and case represents the recommended baseline for new users of the foldable phone.
