Apple has embedded a functional virtual iPod into the error pages of its Apple Music website. The interactive device marks 25 years since the unveiling of the original hardware. Users who encounter a broken link on the platform are presented with a standard page not found message. Below this text, a prompt invites visitors to give the new feature a spin instead. The original device is often cited as a defining product in consumer technology history. Its marketing famously promised to put 1,000 songs in a user's pocket. The web version serves as a digital reminder of that early 2000s claim.

The virtual interface includes a library of 1,029 playable songs. The click wheel and other controls respond to user input, though the experience has some technical bugs. The layout mirrors the original hardware, with sections for Playlists, Artists, Songs, and Settings. Most of the available tracks have a distinctly early 2000s sound. The collection includes artists such as Baha Men, blink-182, and Eminem. A UK-based tester also saw Daniel Bedingfield, The Fratellis, and Klaxons in the library. It is unclear if these specific regional acts appear for users in the United States. Each track plays for a maximum of 90 seconds before stopping.

The feature is most stable on mobile devices. A touch screen makes the interaction feel closer to the physical device. Desktop users may struggle to get the interface to work correctly. Notebook Check discovered that the hidden Breakout-style game called Brick is also included. This game was a genuine hidden extra on the first generation iPod. Users can access it by holding the center button on the About screen for several seconds. The virtual iPod does not appear to require an active Apple Music account to function. The company has not explained why it invested effort in a feature that most users will never see.

The original iPod launched 25 years ago and remains a landmark in digital audio. The web version recreates the tactile feel of the click wheel with limited precision. The 1,029-song library is a fixed set of tracks selected for the anniversary. The 90-second playback limit prevents full listens of any individual song. The inclusion of the Brick game adds a layer of nostalgia for long-time users. The error page serves as the sole gateway to this interactive experience. No other Apple Music page currently displays the virtual device. The feature is accessible to anyone who visits a broken link on the site.
