Apple has placed an interactive replica of the original 2001 iPod on its music website to mark the 25th anniversary of the device. The company first debuted the physical player on October 23, 2001. This digital tribute is not a standalone product launch but a hidden feature on the web platform.
The easter egg was identified by a user named Kian on X. It appears when visitors enter a non-existent path on the music.apple.com domain, such as music.apple.com/ipod. Instead of a standard error message, the browser renders a working version of the classic white player. The interface responds to user input in a manner that mimics the original hardware.
Users can click the on-screen buttons to navigate through a specific playlist. The scroll wheel is also functional, allowing visitors to click and drag to move through the list. This interaction mirrors the turning motion of the physical device. The tracks included are from artists who were popular in 2001, the year the product launched.
Selecting a song plays a 90-second preview directly within the web interface. No additional software or app installation is required to listen to the audio. The feature serves as a retrospective look at the design and functionality of the discontinued hardware.
Apple has not announced any new plans for a dedicated music player. The company currently offers streaming through Apple Music, which costs $11.99 per month. The service is also available as part of the Apple One bundle. The web page remains a static tribute rather than a preview of future hardware.
The virtual device is accessible to any visitor who triggers the specific URL error. The experience is limited to the browser environment. Apple has not released a statement detailing the longevity of the feature or the specific technical implementation behind the clickable interface.
