Kylian Mbappe enters the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London on Monday with a distinct statistical advantage. He holds the record for the most goals in World Cup history. While the award does not include a cash prize, it increases a player's market value and status.

The 2025-26 season, which the award covers, ended without a major trophy for Mbappe at either club or international level. His case rests entirely on individual records.

At the 2026 World Cup in North America, Mbappe won the Golden Boot for the second consecutive tournament. He scored 22 goals in 22 matches to become the all-time leading scorer in the competition's history. Lionel Messi holds the second position with 21 goals, followed by Miroslav Klose with 16. Mbappe described the achievement as overtaking legends in the sport's most important tournament.

His club performance supported his international numbers. Mbappe finished as the top scorer in La Liga with 25 goals. He also led the Champions League scoring charts with 15 goals. He stated that being the top scorer in all major competitions makes this a strong year for his candidacy.

Real Madrid had a difficult campaign. The team played under managers Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa. They finished second in La Liga and lost to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. This marked a second straight season without a major trophy for the club. France finished fourth at the World Cup after losing to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place playoff.

Other contenders have stronger trophy counts. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. Harry Kane won three trophies with Bayern Munich, including the Bundesliga title. Mbappe believes the award goes to an individual, not a team. He noted that individual performance and memorable moments are the key factors. Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho supported the bid, stating that Mbappe made history this summer.

Historical trends favor players with team success. Every Ballon d'Or winner over the past decade lifted at least one trophy. Ousmane Dembele won the prize in 2025 after helping PSG win the Champions League. Rodri won the prize in 2024 after Euro 2024 and the Premier League. The last winner without a major trophy was Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013. Ronaldo scored 66 goals that season while Real Madrid finished as league runners-up.
