Spotify Demands In-Person Scans or Drops Shared Users to Free Tier
A seven-day deadline forces Duo and Family members to verify their location with a physical code or lose premium access for a year.

Spotify is forcing members of Duo and Family plans to meet in person or lose their premium access. The company issued a directive requiring users to scan a QR code on the plan manager's device to retain their subscription status.
The window for compliance is seven days. According to support documentation, anyone who misses the deadline will be moved to the free tier. They will also be blocked from joining any other Duo or Family plan for 12 months.
The new requirement stems from an existing rule that all members of a shared plan must live at the same address. While the policy has long existed, Spotify has historically applied it with minimal enforcement. The current push appears to close the gap between the written terms and actual user behavior.
The verification process has already caused friction for some households. Users on Reddit reported receiving the QR prompt, leading to confusion for families where members live apart. This includes college students away from home or spouses working on the road.
These circumstances mean the crackdown may affect more than just groups of friends sharing a plan to save money. Families who believed they were using the service as intended may now be caught in the verification process.
Financial analysts have long predicted this shift. In a report dated October 15, Goldman Sachs estimated that a meaningful share of family plan users are not actual household members. The firm suggested that tightening household verification on multi-user plans offers additional monetization upside for the company.
