Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska formally endorsed Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins on Tuesday. She also supported his nonpartisan running mate for lieutenant governor, Zac Johnson. This move positions the state's Republican senator behind the Democratic lead in a competitive race.
Murkowski first ran for governor in 2014 before shifting to the Senate. She has served as Alaska's junior senator since 2022. Her decision to support a Democrat marks a distinct break from the party's usual alignment in high-profile state elections.
The race utilizes ranked-choice voting, allowing voters to rank multiple candidates. President Donald Trump has endorsed Republican Bernadette Wilson, creating a three-way dynamic that includes multiple other Republican contenders. The endorsement from Murkowski adds a prominent Republican voice to the Kreiss-Tomkins campaign.
In a statement to KTUU, Murkowski described Kreiss-Tomkins as "a common-sense guy who has a known ability to be working together." She argued that Alaska's future is "too important to be hamstrung by partisan divisions." The campaign's press release echoed her sentiment, noting that governing requires listening to diverse perspectives to solve shared problems.
Kreiss-Tomkins responded to the endorsement via his campaign's release. He stated that Alaskans deserve a government that works through disagreements to make progress. He committed to collaborating with the congressional delegation, the legislature, and local communities. The campaign emphasized that the work ahead requires cooperation rather than political conflict.
The next step in the campaign involves a focused discussion on fiscal policy, energy costs, and economic growth. Murkowski said she encourages Alaskans of every political stripe to evaluate the Kreiss-Tomkins and Johnson ticket. The race will see a final determination through the ranked-choice voting process.
