Five people were hospitalized following two separate shooting incidents near the Michigan State University campus on Halloween night, according to East Lansing police.
Police Chief Jennifer Brown announced the details at a press conference on Sunday afternoon. She stated that officers responded to four distinct incidents in the area. The first reported shooting occurred near the intersection of M.A.C. Avenue and Linden Street. In that instance, multiple shots were fired, and three individuals sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to a hospital. Two of those victims were listed in stable condition, while the condition of the third was not immediately clear.
A second shooting was reported later that night in the area of Stoddard and Frye Avenues. Two additional people were shot in that incident. Both victims are currently listed in stable condition. Officers recovered several guns from the scene, though Brown noted that officials were unsure if those specific weapons were used in the shootings. She confirmed that several individuals were taken into custody in connection with the violence.
Police have not determined whether the two shootings are linked. It is also unclear if any of the victims are students at Michigan State University. A university spokesperson stated that the Department of Police and Public Safety assisted the East Lansing Police Department. The spokesperson added that the criminal activity did not involve a threat to the campus and did not occur on university property.
Brown also provided data on emergency services activity during the holiday. The East Lansing Fire Department responded to 91 total incidents over a 24-hour period. Of those, 75 occurred during the evening of Halloween.
