A fatal shooting took place at Madison Senior High School in Illinois on Sunday night, leaving one person dead and three others injured. Authorities confirmed the incident occurred during a youth football championship game that was not affiliated with the school itself.
The gunfire started around 9:50 p.m. inside the facility. Emergency responders treated the three surviving victims and transported them to local hospitals. The fourth victim did not survive the attack and died at the scene.
The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis is currently leading the investigation. Officers are actively seeking witnesses and individuals who possess information about the event. Lt. Andrew Pierson, the public information officer for the squad, urged the public to report any details they might have.
"You do not have to have the whole story, a single photo, a short video, or one detail you think is insignificant may be exactly what moves this investigation forward," Pierson said.
The Madison School District canceled classes for Monday to allow the community to process the event. Regular schedules are set to resume on Wednesday. In a statement, the district expressed sadness over the violence, noting that although the game was not sponsored by the school, the incident impacts the entire school community. Counseling and support services will be available to students and staff during the break.
Investigators have established a command post for those with information. People can call 618-709-7750 or contact CrimeStoppers at 866-371-8477 to provide details to the Major Case Squad.
