Latvia's National Armed Forces recovered drone wreckage in the Alūksne district on Saturday. The military announced the discovery on October 24, concluding a search that had paused earlier in the week. Officials believe the unmanned aircraft entered Latvian airspace on October 18.
The incident initially gained attention when residents reported a loud noise similar to an explosion. In response, the military and State Police began a joint search for a potential crash site. Investigators halted that first effort after two days because they lacked sufficient information to identify the object or the cause of the noise.
A new investigation is now active to determine the specific circumstances of the crash. An internal review has also started to assess how the event unfolded. The military confirmed that no civilians were injured and that civilian infrastructure sustained no damage. Officials stated they have not identified any additional threats.
This event follows a similar occurrence in neighboring Lithuania. On October 18, authorities found the wreckage of a suspected drone in the village of Juodžionys within the Pasvalys district. Lithuanian officials determined the aircraft entered their airspace from Poland. Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius stated that the drone carried explosives.
Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesman for Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, commented on the Lithuanian incident. He suggested that Russian electronic warfare measures likely caused the drone to deviate from its path. Tykhyi added that Ukraine expressed regret over the event.
