Kamehameha Schools to retain control of West Maui water systems
A draft pact with Maui County would keep the Launiupoko system under school management while securing water rights for future development.

Kamehameha Schools and Maui County have outlined a joint plan to manage critical water infrastructure in West Maui. The proposal aims to streamline the transfer of specific water assets to public stewardship while keeping the Launiupoko Irrigation Co. system under the school's direct operation.
The school acquired nearly 4,000 acres in the region in September 2025. That purchase included the right to buy the Launiupoko system. County officials are currently negotiating with various owners of West Maui water assets to bring those resources under public oversight. This partnership represents the next phase of that effort.
Jack Wong, CEO of Kamehameha Schools, stated the organization's goal is to steward the land for the community and cultural practices. Wong noted that Kamehameha will assume responsibility for the Kauaʻula surface water systems. This move ensures continued service for kuleana land owners in the area.
The agreement includes conditional water source credits for future needs on the school's Kuʻia lands. Both entities say the arrangement will manage water for community needs and support Lahaina's recovery. They also aim to preserve resources for future generations.
The deal is not yet final. It requires approval from the Maui County Council and relevant regulatory agencies before it can take effect. Until those bodies vote, the current ownership and operational structures remain in place.
