Jennifer Lawrence described the experience of stepping back into the role of Katniss Everdeen as "unbelievable" during a recent appearance on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast. The Oscar winner has not played the character in 11 years, having last appeared as Katniss in the 2015 finale of the original film series.
Lawrence is set to reprise her iconic role in "Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping," a prequel film scheduled for release in theaters on November 20. The movie is distributed by Lionsgate and centers on a younger version of Haymitch Abernathy, played by Joseph Zada, as he competes in the 50th Hunger Games.
The return marks a reunion for the original cast members. Lawrence revealed that Josh Hutcherson will also return as Peeta Mellark, while Woody Harrelson comes back as Haymitch. This confirms reports from last December that the two actors would appear in the new film. The inclusion of these characters aligns with the source material, where Suzanne Collins' novel concludes with a flash-forward epilogue featuring the trio.
Lawrence emphasized the emotional weight of reuniting with her former co-stars. She noted that she and Hutcherson often walked around with their arms around each other. She also joked that Harrelson bypassed standard entry points by coming through the window of her hotel room uninvited, stating it would not be the same if he used a door.
The actress previously told Variety in 2023 that she was open to returning to the franchise. At that time, she said, "If Katniss ever could ever come back into my life, 100 percent." She had originally headlined four "Hunger Games" films between 2012 and 2015. The franchise, which includes the 2023 prequel "The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes," has generated $3.3 billion at the global box office.
During the interview, Lawrence discussed her initial hesitation about accepting the role when she was 20 years old. She explained that her primary concern was how the part might impact her acting career and personal life. She referenced the cultural moment of "Twilight" and her desire to become a mother as factors that made the decision feel different from taking on smaller indie projects.
The new film expands the timeline of the franchise by looking back at the events leading up to the original series. Lawrence’s appearance provides a bridge between the prequel narrative and the storylines established in the previous four films. Her comments offer the first public insight into the on-set dynamic with her long-time collaborators.
