The city of Hebron is currently under a strict military blockade, with thousands of Palestinian residents forced to leave their homes. This sudden escalation follows a deadly incident that resulted in the deaths of two Israeli soldiers. The lockdown has effectively sealed off the city, preventing people from entering or leaving, and has triggered a broader wave of military operations across the occupied West Bank.

The scale of the displacement is significant. Yousef al-Ja'bari, the mayor of Hebron, reported that 2,200 people have been driven from their homes. He indicated that hundreds of military raids have occurred since Friday. The initial trigger for this surge in activity was an attack on an Israeli army reserve base by two Palestinian gunmen. Both attackers were killed during the engagement, as were the two soldiers on duty.

Residents have described the conditions of the evacuation as chaotic and abrupt. Families reported that soldiers used loudspeakers to announce evacuation orders late in the night. This left households with little time to gather belongings or arrange transport. Al-Ja'bari confirmed that on Saturday, the city was completely closed off to movement. The lack of preparation has left many displaced families with few options for shelter.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a full lockdown of the West Bank in response to the attack. Military activity has expanded well beyond Hebron. Journalists reported raids in at least 15 different areas on Saturday. These locations include Jenin and Nablus in the north, Ramallah, Al-Bireh, Birzeit, and occupied East Jerusalem in the central region, and Bethlehem in the south. The Palestinian Prisoners' Society stated that approximately 70 Palestinians were arrested during these operations.

The Palestinian Authority, which governs the West Bank, has described the current military actions as a form of collective punishment. Officials cited the demolition of homes, the forced movement of entire neighborhoods, and the closure of Palestinian cities as evidence of this approach. The PA has urged the international community to apply pressure on Israel to protect the residents of Hebron. Meanwhile, the militant group Hamas issued a statement suggesting that the occupation's actions and the presence of settlers will only increase anger among the local population.

The population of Hebron is large and densely packed. Approximately 200,000 Palestinians live in the city itself, while another 600,000 reside elsewhere in the Hebron governorate. This makes it the most populous area in the West Bank. Issa Amro, a political analyst based in Hebron, described the situation as a siege. He noted that all entrances and exits have been closed since the morning. Amro stated that there is no safe place for anyone to hide inside the city and that the local population is living in fear.

The timing of these events is politically sensitive. The Israeli parliamentary elections are scheduled for October 27, just days from now. Nour Odeh, a correspondent for the region, suggested that Israeli politicians are attempting to leverage the attack for political gain. She observed that Netanyahu and his Likud party, along with their right-wing coalition partners, are currently trailing in the polls. Odeh argued that the leadership is trying to project strength by emphasizing their combat against Palestinians.

Tensions were also visible during media coverage of the operations. A team of journalists documenting an Israeli effort to bulldoze homes and vehicles near the Farsh al-Hawa checkpoint in Hebron was targeted by soldiers. The military fired a stun grenade at the press crew while they were working. This incident highlights the friction between the military, local residents, and observers in the area.

The political future of the Palestinian Authority remains uncertain in the wake of the violence. Netanyahu has not explicitly stated whether he plans to dismantle the PA. However, he indicated that a big surprise awaits the organization. This comment adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing negotiations and military actions taking place in the West Bank.
