iPhone Update Split: Apple Ships iOS 27.1 to Duo Only

Apple released iOS 27.1 on the night before October 23, limiting the over-the-air update to the new iPhone Duo. Most iPhone owners will not see this version in their software update menus. Instead, users with other models will continue to see iOS 27.0.1 listed as the latest available build.
The company plans to skip iOS 27.1 entirely for the rest of its smartphone lineup. These devices will move directly to iOS 27.2. Apple has been beta testing that version for roughly the past month. The update is scheduled to reach all users next week.
iOS 27.2 includes several new features. Messages will display Suggested Actions, and Apple Music will receive a new app icon and updated design. Apple TV will support user profiles, while Apple Podcasts will offer an overhauled Up Next queue. FaceTime will add Dual Capture for group calls, and Siri AI will support additional languages.
Apple attributed the split release to secrecy and engineering constraints. The company officially unveiled the iPhone Duo last month, but many specific details only recently became public. By keeping iOS 27.1 separate from other models, Apple avoided a public beta cycle that might have exposed those features early.
Internal management of the Duo's custom iOS designs likely played a role in the decision. Apple noted that isolating the update made it simpler to manage the device's unique features without mixing them with unrelated changes for other iPhones. Owners of standard models will not miss any functionality when they install iOS 27.2 next week.
