The iPhone Duo’s fixed sidebar occupies 15 percent of its 5.4-inch cover display, leaving a substantial portion of the screen unused for primary content. This design decision has become a focal point of early user feedback as the device reaches consumers.

Apple introduced the sidebar to facilitate navigation on the smaller outer screen. The dock is positioned on the right side, which restricts the available space for media and applications. The intent was to create a space-saving solution that stretches media to appear taller, mimicking the layout of a traditional slab phone. However, this approach reduces the area available for main content.

The device’s physical dimensions also impact daily use. The iPhone Duo is reported to be more difficult to operate with one hand compared to its competitors. Its wider form factor makes the cover screen less accessible for single-hand interaction. In contrast, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 features a taller and narrower physical profile. This shape allows users to reach the outer display more easily without adjusting their grip.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 handles the same hardware challenge differently. When set to use a navigation bar rather than gestures, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 shows a clear advantage in screen efficiency. Users of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 who rely on navigation gestures report very little wasted screen space. The outer display remains largely free for content, unlike the constrained view on the iPhone Duo.

The iPhone Duo is currently available but in limited quantities. Samsung continues to see strong performance from the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which benefits from years of refinements to the Android operating system for large screens. Apple’s first foray into this specific form factor is facing scrutiny as users compare the two devices side by side.

The Verge’s Allison Johnson noted the usability differences in a recent review. She highlighted that the Galaxy Z Fold 8’s unique outer screen was a major draw for many users. The iPhone Duo’s software restrictions on an already small display stand out against the more open layout of the Samsung device.

The sidebar on the iPhone Duo effectively locks away a significant section of the cover screen. This static element prevents users from utilizing the full width of the 5.4-inch panel for standard tasks. The comparison with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 illustrates the trade-off between a fixed navigation dock and a more flexible use of screen real estate.
