Tesla has begun manufacturing its Optimus humanoid robot on a high-volume assembly line inside its Fremont, California facility. The company stated in its third-quarter shareholder letter that the units coming off this line are the first to meet production standards. Tesla added that the current manufacturing process has been proven suitable for a commercial product.

The new robot line occupies the space that previously built the Model S and Model X. Tesla cleared the old vehicle production line in 46 days to make room for a capacity of one million units per year. On Wednesday, CEO Elon Musk told investors that most of the equipment for this capacity is already installed. He said weekly output will climb toward 20,000 robots as the line ramps up.

Musk described the production increase as following an S-curve with a shallow initial slope. His team is currently refining the robot's AI, electromechanical design, and reliability. Tesla expects to finish this work by the end of next year. At that point, the company plans to start delivering Optimus units to outside businesses for dangerous and repetitive tasks.

Tesla is addressing a data gap by creating an internal training program called the Optimus Academy. Unlike its cars, which send driving data from millions of vehicles, the robots do not yet have a large fleet to generate training examples. Musk noted that Tesla lacks a vast fleet of cars from which to gather specific robot data. The academy will use 10,000 to 20,000 robots to practice various tasks. Every unit produced at Fremont will contribute data to the next version of the AI model.

Hardware improvements are also scheduled for next year. Tesla plans to integrate its AI5 chip into the Optimus platform. Musk said a new video showing the robot completing tasks via AI rather than preprogrammed motions will arrive within one or two months. He criticized rival humanoid demonstrations that rely on scripted routines, arguing those systems would not hold up in real-world conditions.

The shift marks a transition from experimental prototypes to a standardized manufacturing process. The Fremont facility now prioritizes humanoid assembly over legacy vehicle production. The goal is to reach a steady state of 20,000 units per week before expanding delivery to external customers.
