Apple TV subscribers in the United States can now watch Formula 1 coverage with Dolby Atmos audio. The upgrade took effect on Friday, October 23, for the start of the United States Grand Prix weekend.
Apple and Dolby Laboratories announced the addition earlier this month. They confirmed that the United States Grand Prix would be the first Formula 1 race ever broadcast in the Dolby Atmos format.
Apple states that the spatial audio design places viewers in the center of the race weekend. The mix includes team radio, commentary, engine noise, on-track action, and pit lane sounds. The company adds that combining Dolby Atmos with Dolby Vision provides enhanced visuals and sound quality.
First practice has concluded. Subscribers can view the remaining sessions in the new audio format. Practice 2 begins on Friday, October 23, at 5 p.m. ET. Practice 3 is scheduled for Saturday, October 24, at 1:30 p.m. ET. Qualifying follows at 5 p.m. ET on the same day. The race takes place on Sunday, October 25, at 4 p.m. ET.
Apple is hosting a live screening of the Sunday race at its Domain NORTHSIDE store in Austin, Texas. The location also hosted Apple CEO John Ternus and retail chief Deirdre O'Brien on Friday for the iPhone Duo launch.
The company updated Apple Maps for the event. It expanded the Detailed City Experience to Austin. The map now includes the Circuit of The Americas with turn numbers, grandstands, and 3D landmarks.
Apple TV costs $14.99 per month. It is also available through the Apple One bundle. The service streams titles such as Ted Lasso, Severance, The Studio, The Morning Show, Shrinking, and Silo.
