The Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial was closed to the public for months while the Department of Interior performed necessary repairs. On Monday, with voting set to begin in roughly 24 hours, President Donald Trump visited the site to mark the completion of the project.
The president stepped off the campaign trail after conducting nearly 30 rallies across the country. He used the visit to declare the pool in better condition than it had ever been. He also repeated previous claims that vandalism had damaged the structure before the repairs began.
"The people from Interior have been incredible. And the pool is now better and more beautiful than it's ever been before. And we're very proud of it," Trump said.
He addressed voters directly, framing the upcoming contest as the most important midterm election in American lifetime. He described the Democratic Party's candidates as the most extreme and dangerous slate in the nation's history.
Pollsters indicate that the high cost of living is the top concern for voters this cycle. The president did not address that issue during his remarks at the memorial. Instead, he characterized the U.S. economy as strong and resilient.
Historical data shows that the party in power usually loses seats during midterm elections. Republicans currently hold a razor-thin majority in Congress and hope to defy that pattern. Final polls suggest a significant Democratic gain is likely for the 2026 elections.
