Stock markets in the United States have historically risen in the months following midterm elections, regardless of which party holds power.
Wednesday's trading session marked a sharp departure from post-election uncertainty as major indices climbed steeply. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1,519 points, a gain of 2.9 percent, by the afternoon. The Nasdaq composite also advanced, adding 1.9 percent to its value during the same timeframe.
President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Wednesday to acknowledge the surge. He noted that the market had reached a record high for the 91st time in less than two years. In his post, he told investors their 401(k)s were through the roof and labeled the period record-setting.
The financial jump occurred one day after voters handed the Democratic Party control of both chambers of Congress. Democrats flipped multiple government positions and states, ending the Republican Party's sole control of Washington. Analysts suggest Wall Street viewed this shift as a preferred political scenario, which helped drive prices higher despite the loss of a unified GOP government.
Trump retains executive authority over defense, foreign policy, and certain trade areas despite the legislative change. In an interview with Fox News, he signaled a willingness to cooperate with the new majority. He told reporters, "Congratulations to the Democrats," adding that they had fought hard for a long time. When asked about collaboration, he stated, "I would do that. I think the Democrats want to work with me."
