Voters in every state received mail from a suspect ahead of the recent congressional midterms. The packages contained threatening messages and a white powder that alarmed recipients. Federal agents have identified the sender.
Robin Martin, an Oklahoma City resident, was charged in US District Court in Oklahoma on Monday. Prosecutors accuse him of conveying false information, creating hoaxes, and mailing threatening communications. The charges cover mailings sent in early October.
The FBI stated that the letters were addressed to state election officials in all 50 states. The agency also believes Martin sent similar threats to election and postal officials in 2024. Laboratory tests revealed the white powder was either harmless yeast or flour.
The October letters used an outdated return address for the Democratic Socialists of America in New York. In August, Martin contacted the DSA and obtained member email addresses. He added these addresses to a mailing list that sent warnings about arrest for voting.
Agents linked the mailings to Martin using surveillance video from postal facilities and a Walmart. The video showed him purchasing a phone believed to have been used in the plot. A letter sent to FBI Director Kash Patel contained Martin's fingerprints and a message in ultraviolet ink reading "FBI SAVE THE USA".
Martin had no legal representative available for comment. The 2024 letter claimed Donald Trump won the 2020 election and cited concerns about recurring issues in the 2024 cycle.
