Jordan’s security apparatus is expanding its operational footprint across the kingdom following a significant loss of life in the southwest. The event has triggered a coordinated response that is expected to influence public confidence and local economic activity in the coming weeks.

The royal court confirmed that King Abdullah has directed security forces to pursue those responsible for the violence with firmness. The incident occurred at a Greek Orthodox church in the Karak governorate, situated roughly 120 kilometers southwest of the capital, Amman. A total of eight individuals were killed, while another forty sustained injuries during the incident.

Gunmen opened fire for several minutes in broad daylight while a funeral service was in progress. Jordanian officials have classified the event as an act of extremist terrorism. Although no specific group has formally claimed responsibility, authorities are continuing their search for the perpetrators. The kingdom has observed three days of national mourning in response to the tragedy.

In the immediate aftermath, the US embassy in Amman reported that security measures have been intensified at high-profile locations. Shopping malls, foreign embassies, and other key sites across the country have seen increased patrols. This heightened state of alert represents a tangible shift in the country’s security posture, aiming to reassure both residents and international partners.

King Abdullah traveled to Karak within hours of the shooting to oversee the response. He pledged that those responsible would be dealt with decisively. Prime Minister Jafar Hassan described the event as a manifestation of terrorist ideology and blind extremism. He stated that the nation would not allow society to follow that path, signaling a strong political stance against the forces behind the attack.

Witnesses provided detailed accounts of the chaos. Nasser al-Burqan, a lawyer who survived the shooting, told Reuters that an assailant standing about two meters away fired a handgun at him. He later learned that his son, who was also present, had been shot in the leg and was receiving hospital treatment. Al-Burqan noted that he saw two assailants after the gunfire stopped, one of whom was masked.

Local leaders have voiced strong condemnation of the violence. Tarek Ammarin, whose relative was injured, described the scene at the hospital as a massacre in every sense. Bahjat al-Rushda, the mayor of Shihan village in Karak, called the attack wicked and expressed hope that the country would remain safe. While such incidents are rare in Jordan, authorities note that they have repeatedly thwarted plots by violent groups in recent years. The region holds a minority Christian population and several biblical sites that attract pilgrims from around the world, making the security of these areas a key economic and diplomatic concern.
