The anticipated public listing of Anthropic, which is expected to occur this year, promises significant financial rewards for both early and late stage investors. Market expectations suggest the company could reach a valuation of up to $2 trillion upon its debut on the stock exchange. However, even before that event, the current private market valuation of $965 billion has already created substantial wealth for the venture capital firms and individuals who backed the artificial intelligence lab.

Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, is among those reaping the benefits. According to PitchBook data, Schmidt participated in Anthropic's Series A round in 2021, a time when the startup was valued at $461 million. His initial investment has grown significantly, and he now holds approximately 1% of the company. At the latest private valuation, this stake is worth nearly $10 billion, reflecting the rapid appreciation of the asset since his entry.

Late stage bets have also yielded impressive returns. Iconiq, an investment firm, wrote a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year when the company was already valued at $183 billion. That massive position is now valued at $17 billion. Analysts note that this stake has the potential to double in value once the company completes its initial public offering, highlighting the leverage of capital deployed at high valuations.

Menlo Ventures, which led the company's Series D financing, has invested more than $1 billion in Anthropic over several rounds. This cumulative investment now represents a stake worth $14 billion. Similarly, Sequoia, a well known venture capital firm, made its first investment in the AI lab earlier this year. At that time, the company was valued at $380 billion. Sequoia's $3 billion investment secured it about 1% ownership, a move that has already more than doubled the initial outlay.

Sound Ventures, a firm launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, also holds a significant position. The company invested $35 million in Anthropic's Series C round in 2023. Since then, Sound Ventures has funneled an additional $400 million into the business. This sustained capital injection has resulted in a stake that is now worth billions. It is worth noting that Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to launch a separate venture capital firm.

Spark Capital offers a distinct perspective on the growth trajectory of Anthropic's shares. The firm is known as the only venture capital investor holding a board seat at the company. Spark Capital invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round, when Anthropic was valued at $5 billion. That initial position has ballooned by more than ninetyfold, reaching a current value of $7 billion.

The collective holdings of these backers illustrate the depth of capital committed to the leading AI lab. As the company moves toward its public listing, the focus of the market will shift from private mark to market to public trading dynamics. The expected $2 trillion valuation will serve as a benchmark for the broader technology sector, signaling strong investor confidence in the commercial viability of advanced artificial intelligence models.

For the Pacific Northwest business community, these developments underscore the region's growing role in the global AI economy. The financial performance of companies like Anthropic provides a clear indicator of market sentiment toward high growth technology assets. As the IPO approaches, stakeholders will be watching closely for any changes in valuation that could impact the broader tech market landscape.
