Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut is in the hospital after suffering a stroke. His office confirmed the diagnosis on Sunday, and medical staff reported that he is responding well to treatment.
Allison Herwitt, the senator's chief of staff, provided details about the incident in a public statement. She said Murphy began feeling numbness in his arm on Saturday afternoon while attending his son's hockey game. He was immediately taken to a local hospital, where doctors identified the stroke. Murphy was then transferred to Johns Hopkins for continued monitoring.
Herwitt noted that the senator is expected to make a full recovery. He is currently 53 years old. The hospitalization comes as Murphy remains an active voice in national politics. He has served as a campaign surrogate for Democratic candidates during the current midterm cycle. He is also frequently cited as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential election.
Murphy is known for his focus on foreign policy and oversight of the executive branch. He recently returned from a tour of the Middle East. Following that trip, he warned that President Trump would escalate the war on Iran after the midterm election. This health event adds to a pattern of medical crises among members of Congress this year.
Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky missed several months of Senate work earlier this year due to a long hospital stay and rehabilitation. Representative Tom Kean of New Jersey was absent from the Capitol for months while receiving treatment for depression. In 2022, three Democratic lawmakers were hospitalized for strokes: Senator Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico, Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, and then-Senate candidate John Fetterman.
