Lauren Ebert, a 40-year-old resident of Whatcom, is currently competing in a national contest for aspiring broadcasters. The competition, known as Top Host, requires participants to submit candid applications to demonstrate their unique style. Ebert entered the process after seeing the call for entries on social media. She described her approach to the application as open and direct, focusing on her natural empathy and desire for genuine human connection.

The stakes for the eventual winner are substantial. The victor will host a six-part series on iHeart Radio. Additionally, the winner will appear as a guest star on an episode of the show On Air with Ryan Seacrest. The prize package includes a $25,000 cash award. Ebert, who has been active on TikTok and hopes to launch a podcast, views this competition as a potential accelerator for those professional goals.

Ebert has passed the initial screening and now resides in the Group Phase of the tournament. Public voting for this stage concludes on Nov. 5. If she places in the top five, she will advance to the final group stage. The highest-ranked participant from that stage moves to the quarterfinals. The runner-up from the final group stage enters a wildcard round, where the winner also secures a spot in the quarterfinals.

The journey to this point is personal for Ebert, who is a survivor of Stage 4 cancer. She noted that doctors gave her a 5% chance of survival when she was first diagnosed. This experience shaped her perspective on time and opportunity. She stated that she learned the hard way that the future is not guaranteed, a lesson that drives her to pursue current goals with urgency.

Ebert aims to bring humor and emotional honesty to her work. She expressed a preference for unpolished conversations that reflect real life. She told the Tribune, “I really love being able to laugh at the chaos. I’m also probably going to cry with you if that’s what the situation merits.” She wants to create a space where people, particularly women from her generation, can discuss their experiences without judgment.

Her vision for a future podcast involves a round table format with friends or guest stars. The goal is to unpack daily events and shared traumas in an empowering way. Ebert emphasized that building a supportive community, or a village, is central to her work. She intends to show up authentically for her audience, regardless of whether she wins the Top Host competition.

Ebert described her current life stage as a new chapter. After her two eldest daughters married, she began reevaluating her identity outside of being a wife and mother. She said it is acceptable to be unsure of the next steps and figure them out as she goes. This mindset of openness guides both her personal life and her professional aspirations in media.
