The College Football Playoff committee released its first official rankings of the 2026 season on Tuesday, placing the Oregon Ducks at No. 23. The selection appeared on ESPN and marks the first time the Ducks have appeared in the CFP standings this year. This ranking positions the team higher than its standing in the Associated Press poll, where Oregon fell just outside the Top 25 in the Week 9 release on Sunday.

Oregon entered the season as the No. 2 team in the preseason AP Top 25 and was viewed as a national title contender. The team currently holds a 5-3 record, a result that has dimmed its championship hopes but kept it in contention for a playoff spot. The CFP committee’s evaluation suggests a divergence in perspective compared to AP voters, who did not include the Ducks in the top 25.

The final CFP rankings will determine the 12-team bracket scheduled for release on December 6. Automatic bids are reserved for the champions of the ACC, Big 12, SEC, and Big Ten. Since the field expanded prior to the 2024 season, two teams with three losses have qualified. Clemson in 2024 and Alabama in 2025 both earned spots by winning their conference championship games.

Oregon’s path to the bracket hinges on finishing as one of the top two teams in the Big Ten with the best in-conference record. The Ducks are currently one of seven teams with two Big Ten losses. UCLA is the only undefeated team in the conference at 5-0, while Indiana stands at 5-1 and Ohio State is at 4-1. Oregon holds a head-to-head tiebreaker over USC and Northwestern but would lose to Illinois and UCLA in a hypothetical tie scenario.

The Ducks face Ohio State in Columbus at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. A victory would secure a tiebreaker advantage over the Buckeyes. To maintain a realistic chance at the conference championship, Oregon needs Indiana to lose or UCLA to falter. The Ducks must also win their remaining four games.

Indiana has a bye this weekend and will finish the season against USC, Washington, and Purdue. The Big Ten standings as of November 3 show UCLA at the top, followed by Indiana, Ohio State, and USC. Six other teams are tied at 3-2, creating a complex tiebreaker landscape for the remaining spots in the conference.

The outcome of Saturday’s game against Ohio State will be a defining moment for Oregon’s season. The Ducks aim to improve their standing within the conference and keep their playoff aspirations alive heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
