For the average consumer and tech industry observer, the landscape of artificial intelligence has shifted dramatically in a matter of days. While U.S. federal civilian agencies have been instructed to remove DeepSeek’s technology from their systems due to security concerns, the Hangzhou-based startup has simultaneously locked in approximately $15 billion. This infusion of capital, equivalent to roughly 100 billion yuan, stands as one of the largest funding events in China’s tech history. The timing suggests that despite regulatory headwinds from the West, the company is moving forward with aggressive expansion plans.

The move places DeepSeek in a unique position to continue its rapid growth while navigating new geopolitical boundaries. According to reports from Bloomberg, the funding round includes potential participation from major Chinese corporate players. CATL, a leading battery manufacturer, and Tencent, the technology giant behind the popular messaging app WeChat, are among the entities reportedly involved in the investment. Their involvement signals broad confidence in DeepSeek’s long-term viability and strategic importance within the Chinese market.

This latest capital raise builds on a series of significant financial milestones achieved earlier this year. In June, DeepSeek secured more than $7 billion in funding at a valuation of $50 billion. By July, the company was reportedly seeking an additional $1.5 billion, which would have placed its valuation near $71 billion. These rapid valuations have kept investors focused on the possibility of a public listing in China as early as next year, further cementing its status as a market leader.

The new funds are expected to accelerate spending on AI infrastructure and the development of open models. DeepSeek aims to serve both domestic and international markets, even as it faces specific restrictions in the United States. This strategy could intensify competition among rival AI firms in China, forcing them to innovate and expand their own capabilities to keep pace with the well-funded startup.

The investment reflects a broader global trend where billions of dollars are flowing into AI companies to secure a competitive edge. In China, other major players have also attracted substantial attention and capital recently. Moonshot AI, the developer of the Kimi model, raised $2 billion at a $20 billion valuation in May. Earlier this month, Manus AI secured more than $500 million. Additionally, Zhipu AI and MiniMax, both of which went public in Hong Kong in January, currently hold market capitalizations of approximately $29 billion and $7.2 billion, respectively.

DeepSeek was founded in 2023 by Liang Wenfeng, who previously co-founded the quantitative hedge fund High-Flyer. That fund played a crucial role in financing the startup’s early development. The company first gained widespread global attention in early 2025 when it released a free-to-use, open-weight reasoning model. This release challenged the existing dominance of major U.S. AI providers and highlighted the potential for non-American firms to lead in advanced AI capabilities.

Corporate ownership data analyzed by WireScreen indicates that Liang retains a significant controlling interest in the company. He holds an estimated 81.6% stake in the Chinese operating entity following the earlier funding rounds. This level of ownership provides the founder with substantial influence over the company’s strategic direction and operational decisions as it scales its infrastructure and market reach.

As the AI race continues to accelerate, the interplay between funding, regulation, and technological development remains a central theme. DeepSeek’s ability to raise such a large sum shortly after U.S. restrictions were imposed underscores the resilience of the Chinese tech sector. The company did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the new funding round or its future plans.
